Referencing

Referencing correctly will improve the quality of your academic work and help you avoid accidental plagiarism.

Take a look at the library's guide to referencing which covers why, when and how to reference your sources:

There are a variety of reference managers available. Some of the more commonly-used software packages include EndNote, Mendeley, and Zotero. Regardless of which one you use, it will allow you to store and organise sources, as well as quickly insert citations into a piece of writing and automatically generate a reference list or bibliography.

There are many different referencing styles, and it is important to ensure that you are following the appropriate style for your subject. Check with your tutor if you are unclear as to which style you should be using.

Many of the major referencing styles used at the University of Bristol are covered in the below resources:

What is BibTeX?

BibTeX is commonly used with LaTeX to help organise references and create a bibliography. Each reference in the bibliography file (.bib) is formatted with a certain structure and is given a 'key' by which you refer to in the source .tex file. All major reference managers work with BibTeX.
